Vision

  • GPEx will support a pipeline of educational excellence for general practice education from undergraduate through to specialist registration as a general practitioner.
  • We will maximise opportunities for alignment of rural and indigenous pathways through a focus on customised and personalised support of registrars.
  • Using evidenced-based decision making, we will develop practice and supervisor capacity to ensure the optimum number of quality training posts.
  • We will understand and be responsive to community workforce issues by working collaboratively with local agencies and stakeholders.

Mission

GPEx will deliver high quality, responsive and forward thinking education and training, that provides South Australia with a skilled and sustainable general practice workforce which meets the needs of local communities.

GPEx will deliver on its mission by way of four strategic priorities:

1. The provision of innovative education and training for registrars, so they become culturally safe, competent, independent GP practitioners capable of providing services in urban, rural and remote locations.

Key areas of focus:

  • Deliver high quality vocational training to meet and exceed the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) and Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) training standards for urban and rural communities.
  • Use an evidence-based approach to underpin the development of innovative education and training – engage and lead research in medical education.
  • Develop and implement IT training solutions responsive to regional, supervisory and training program requirements.
  • Develop community-based learning hubs that support vertical integration.
  • Prioritise professional and personal safety and cultural security within the education experience.
  • Provide pastoral care that supports the wellbeing of registrars.

2. GPEx will be a centre for excellence in graduating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors.

Key areas of focus:

  • Help close the gap in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health.
  • Facilitate an increase in indigenous doctors entering general practice.
  • Ensure education and training contributes to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health care.
  • Provide registrars with the knowledge and skills to deliver services that contribute to closing the gap.

3. GPEx will develop medical educator and support staff who are recognised for their commitment and innovation and who collaborate with stakeholders and communities to meet local health workforce needs.

Key areas of focus:

  • Develop the optimum number of quality training practices in urban, outer metropolitan and rural locations responsive to changing population health needs.
  • Engage and be responsive to population health, community and cultural needs.
  • Facilitate the recruitment, placement and retention of registrars into the rural GP pipeline.
  • Develop a pathway for registrars to become medical educators and supervisors.
  • Provide support for practices and supervisors to develop a culture of integrated multi-level learner teaching within general practice.
  • Develop an innovative solutions-focused culture across the organisation that identifies opportunities for efficiencies and addresses barriers.

4. GPEx will be a responsible corporate leader, committed to reconciliation, sound governance, stakeholder engagement and the development of staff and doctors in training to drive continuous quality improvement.

Key areas of focus:

  • Develop a culture that embraces diversity and supports reconciliation.
  • Ensure robust financial, administrative and communication systems.
  • Implement an engagement strategy that facilitates effective collaboration and knowledge sharing and reflects changing contexts.
  • Establish a culture of professional development that supports excellence in organisational performance and develops future leaders.
