Adult Internal Medicine can be undertaken through Advanced Specialised Training or Advanced Rural Skills Training.

GPs in small rural towns have limited access to tertiary hospitals. Therefore, as a rural GP, you will often have to manage internal medicine patients in the community and local hospital.

An Advanced Skill in Adult Internal Medicine provides you with the knowledge and skills to manage patients with acute complex medical and chronic disease problems, including multiple morbidities.

In an Adult Internal Medicine post, you will:

  • build your skills and knowledge in the prevention and treatment of adult diseases;
  • develop more advanced diagnostic skills; and
  • learn how to manage chronic complex conditions in a rural setting.

“My additional skills in internal medicine really complements and reinforces my general practice training. It allows me to be more comfortable managing conditions that in the past I may have had to refer to specialist colleagues earlier.”
– Dr James Walker (FRACGP + FARGP + Adult Internal Medicine), Goyders Line Medical Practice, Jamestown
