Rural and remote areas require Rural Generalists to provide anaesthetic services depending on the needs of their community.

Anaesthetics training can be undertaken through Advanced Specialised Training or Advanced Rural Skills Training.

With specialist anaesthetic skills, you will be able to support surgery and other procedures that would otherwise not be possible in rural communities, such as obstetrics, general surgery and emergency presentations.

In an Anaesthetics placement, you will:

  • develop the clinical skills required to manage safe anaesthesia practices in a rural GP setting;
  • provide pre-operative assessments and post-anaesthetic care; and
  • learn how to administer local, topical and regional anaesthesia.

“I wanted to have variety to my working week and be a competent rural General Practitioner. I decided Anaesthetics would provide variety, but also allow me to be better equipped to manage emergency presentations.”

– Dr Sophie Rymill (FACRRM + Anaesthetics), Kincraig Medical Centre, Naracoorte
