People with a disability in Australia experience poorer health outcomes and lower average life expectancy, and often face many barriers to attending medical appointments.
Disability Medicine can be undertaken through an Extended Skill.
In a Disability Medicine placement, you will:
- provide healthcare to patients with a disability through collaboration between disability support workers, pharmacists and allied health practitioners to improve health outcomes;
- develop strategies for assessing people with a disability (even if they have limited verbal communication skills), and understand the potential medical, psychological or environmental causes that can masquerade as a change in behaviour for a person with an intellectual disability; and
- develop a better understanding of the National Disability Insurance Scheme and where GPs can support their patients.
“I came to Adelaide Disability Medical Services as a registrar with an eagerness to learn how I could make a positive impact on a vulnerable cohort. Adapting my knowledge of medicine in a flexible way to people with unique communication and social needs keeps me on my toes. Now, as a principal GP, I continue to find the work incredibly rewarding.”
