GPs play a crucial role in the provision of mental health services for all Australians. Mental health is a particular priority in rural areas, due to the high incidence of mental health conditions and the scarcity of specialist mental health services in these regions.
Mental Health can be undertaken through an Extended Skill, Advanced Specialised Training or Advanced Rural Skills Training.
In a Mental Health placement, you will:
- provide high-quality mental health care services to your community ;
- learn how to diagnose and treat patients with mental health conditions; and
- learn how to formulate an appropriate management plan, incorporating specialist practitioner’s advice or referral where applicable.
“Apart from my own specific interest in the field, the other contributing factor to choosing mental health as my extended skill was the understanding that there is a shortage of people who are able to provide these services, especially in rural communities.”
