Hahndorf

About Hahndorf

There are very few places in Australia, where you can drive through Australian countryside, and suddenly enter a world that resembles Central Europe. Hahndorf – Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement – is just that. With a population of 2,670 residents, Hahndorf is a popular tourist destination with about a million visitors savouring its charm and hospitality each year. This contemporary town is proud of its German heritage, which is still visible through its bakeries, smallgoods shops, pubs, Lutheran churches, wooden folk art, and cuckoo clocks. Hahndorf’s shady, tree-lined and unique main street is a shopper’s paradise – there are galleries and studios, winery cellar doors, traditional sweet shops, a cheese maker, leathersmith, jeweller, craft brewery, gin distillery, chocolatier, and multicultural restaurants and cafes. The town also has primary schools and sports clubs.
