In a collaborative effort to enhance sleep health management, GPEx and the Australasian Sleep Association (ASA) have provided General Practitioners and Primary Healthcare teams with this informative webinar providing education and training on sleep disorders as part of our GP Education Program.
Though this live event has passed, in this webinar recording, Prof Brendon Yee and Dr Sheila Sivam unpack the complexity of assessing and treating sleep disorders and equip participants with further skills and knowledge around:
- Central Disorders of Hypersomnia
- Insomnia and Orexin
- Restless legs syndrome
- Parasomnia
The webinar includes discussion and case studies to engage and enable participants to practically apply their skills and knowledge.
Professor Brendon Yee

Respiratory and Sleep Physician
With his comprehensive medical training and role as a Clinical Professor, he teaches and leads sleep medicine research at the University of Sydney. At the Woolcock Institute, he’s part of a team focused on understanding how our sleep and body clocks work to improve our health. He’s dedicated to making lives better through better sleep.
Professor Brendon Yee is a Staff Specialist in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine and Medical Director of Respiratory Failure Services at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He is also a consultant for Rural Outreach Services in Sleep and Respiratory Medicine in Central Western NSW, previous Chair of the Professional Standards Committee of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and a member of the Clinical Committee of the Australasian Sleep Association.
Professor Yee is a graduate of the University of Otago, New Zealand and completed his sleep fellowship in Wellington, New Zealand and then Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney. He has a PhD from his research on the metabolic effects of sleep apnea and the effect of weight loss and is a previous Young Investigator Award Winner of the Australasian Sleep Association.
Dr Shelia Sivam

Respiratory and Sleep Physician
Dr Sivam brings a wealth of experience to diagnosing and treating lung and sleep conditions, with a keen focus on managing severe asthma cases. She is dedicated to enhancing patient well-being through the delivery of top-tier care and the latest treatment methodologies.
Dr Sivam runs the Narcolepsy and Hypersomnolence Clinic at WIMR and is a member of the Australasian Sleep Association (ASA)Medicines Subcommittee, which is currently working on advocating for improved access to first line medications and research opportunities for narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia. In addition, she is a member of the ASA Hypersomnolence Data Registry Working Group.
Dr Sivam, trained in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine, has worked across North America and completed her fellowship in Sydney. She manages a clinic for sleep disorders at the Woolcock Institute and is active in the Australasian Sleep Association, advocating for better access to sleep disorder medications and contributing to a data registry for hypersomnolence.
