gpex delivers practical online supervisor resources for Ahpra’s Medical Expedited Specialist Pathway

gpex has designed and developed a suite of online learning resources for the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) to support supervisors of Specialist International Medical Graduates undertaking the Medical Expedited Specialist Pathway.

The resources were created to help supervisors understand their role and responsibilities under the Supervised Practice Framework, while providing clear, practical guidance on the processes required across the supervision period.

The project responds to the needs of experienced clinicians and supervisors working in busy health settings. Many supervisors have limited time for additional training, so the resources needed to be concise, accurate and easy to navigate, while still covering the specific requirements of supervising a Specialist International Medical Graduate through the Expedited Specialist Pathway.

gpex worked with Ahpra Senior Policy Advisors, with project deliverables reviewed and approved by an Expert Reference Group and the Medical Board. This collaborative process ensured the resources aligned with Ahpra requirements, supported regulatory objectives, and remained practical for the supervisors using them.

The final solution includes six short online modules, designed to be completed in sessions of approximately 10 minutes. Rather than using a traditional course structure or relying on knowledge testing, the modules provide direct access to the information supervisors need at each stage of the pathway.

To support engagement and comprehension, gpex used a mix of text, interactivity, video, and audio. A SIMG supervisory timeline graphic was also developed to help supervisors follow the supervision journey and locate relevant guidance quickly.

The resources bring together the key requirements of the supervisor role during the SIMG supervision period, while highlighting the differences between supervising a SIMG and other supervision contexts. They are designed to be efficient to use, easy to absorb, and aligned with the practical realities of clinical supervision.

The project demonstrates gpex’s capability in translating complex regulatory and supervision requirements into accessible, fit-for-purpose digital education for specialist health audiences.
By tailoring the design to the audience, the pathway, and the project objectives, gpex supported Ahpra’s goal of providing clear and practical guidance for supervisors of Specialist International Medical Graduates undertaking the Medical Expedited Specialist Pathway.
