Leveraging Healthcare Professionals in the Fight against Cervical Cancer
Since 2021, GPEx has developed and hosted various CPD-accredited online education courses for the Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer.
To date these courses have trained more than 3,500 healthcare professionals to encourage participation in the National Cervical Screening Program, identify under-screened populations and implement quality improvements.
Overview
The Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer (ACPCC) is a world-leader in the prevention and control of cervical cancer and a key player in supporting Australia’s National Bowel Cancer Screening Program.
They have more than 55 years of expertise in cervical cancer prevention and offer a comprehensive suite of services to implement, support, monitor and manage large-scale population health programs.
With ample evidence attesting to the pivotal role GPs and other healthcare professionals play in influencing an individual’s decision to screen, they are firmly committed to ensuring health practitioners have the knowledge and skills they need to do so.

Breast, Bowel and Cervical Cancer Screening
This education module aims to consolidate current clinical guidance and program policy for breast, bowel and cervical cancer screening into one accessible online course. It aims to support general practitioners, practice nurses and other interested healthcare practitioners, to endorse cancer screening to their patients and follow current screening clinical guidelines.
This educational activity supports clinicians to discuss and promote participation in bowel, breast and cervical cancer screening among eligible patients, including groups that are currently underscreened.
Cervical Screening, HPV and Self-Collection
This program has been developed by VCS Pathology, a division of the Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer (ACPCC), to provide primary Healthcare Practitioners across Australia with the knowledge and skills to be able to offer the option of HPV self-collection to eligible patients and increase cervical screening participation rates.
On completion GPs will be confident to discuss the option of HPV self-collection as well as conventional cervical screening with patients who are due or overdue for cervical screening. They will be able to appropriately manage results according to clinical guidelines, and support patients throughout the screening pathway.
The course covers the progression of cervical disease and its relation to HPV infection, the current national policy and clinical guidelines on HPV self-collection, as well as strategies to address barriers and promote enablers to cervical screening.
VCS Pathology Cervical Screening Audit
This program has been developed by VCS Pathology, a division of the Australian Centre for the Prevention of Cervical Cancer (ACPCC), to encourage meaningful change in cervical screening practice and engagement.
It is available to practitioners across Australia who refer Cervical Screening Tests and co-tests to the VCS Pathology laboratory. The aim of this Cervical Screening Audit program is to enable VCS Pathology referring practitioners to participate in a comparative review of their own practice findings to target areas for improvement.
National Cervical Screening Program Bundle
These modules provide a broad overview of cervical cancer, human papillomavirus, cervical anatomy, and how we can eliminate cervical cancer through primary and secondary prevention strategies. Importantly, the key role of healthcare providers and practice staff are highlighted throughout these modules.
