Participate in our current Survey!
As part of our service agreement for the GP Obstetric Shared Care Program, SA Health has requested that we conduct this survey with Accredited GPs.
We are seeking your feedback on the Program’s aims and objectives, the education and resources provided, and your overall satisfaction with the Program.
Your insights are valuable to us. All responses will remain confidential and will be used solely to improve the Program.
The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
We value your time and thank you for taking part in the survey and for sharing your experience.
Living with Loss
The Stillbirth CRE has now officially launched their Living with Loss Program for bereaved parents.
It has 6 modules – parents choose which modules they want to complete in a timeframe that suits them. There will be a publication at some point but the main outcome of the RCT (40% of people undertook all modules in an 8-week timeframe in the treatment group) was that the people in the treatment group reported lower levels of distress earlier with an associated reduction in need for support services.
If you want to review the content prior to recommending to bereaved parents in your Practice, there is an option to click on ‘health professionals’ that will bypass the inbuilt measures.

Webinar: Reduce the Risk of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
The Adelaide PHN ‘Alcohol and Pregnancy/Breastfeeding and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD)’ webinar supports GPs and health professionals to provide accurate, up-to-date information, assessment and support during antenatal and postnatal periods to reduce the risk of FASD.
FASD can have serious lifelong complications for health, development and learning, and diagnosis is complex.
This webinar will assist you to:
- understand the risks of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, breastfeeding and when trying to conceive
- describe appropriate assessment strategies in relation to alcohol and pregnancy
- apply evidence-based advice consistent with national alcohol guidelines
- outline resources about alcohol, pregnancy and breastfeeding to support discussion with consumers.
The webinar is part of the Every Moment Matters campaign, which is endorsed and funded by the Australian Government and the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education and accredited by RACGP.
Sexual Health
Syphilis cases on the rise
There has been a dramatic increase in syphilis cases in South Australia over the past few years.
If left untreated, syphilis can give rise to serious health problems, including neurological, cardiovascular and skeletal damage. And while some people may experience symptoms, syphilis commonly goes unnoticed, with diagnosis only coming through screening.
It is recommended that health professionals include syphilis in all routine sexual health screening.
Syphilis testing is also recommended routinely in all pregnancies at the first antenatal check at 26-28 weeks, and at 36 weeks or at time of any preterm birth. Syphilis can be transmitted to a baby during pregnancy leading to miscarriage, premature birth, and infant death. Babies born with congenital syphilis can have significant, lifelong health problems.

Omega-3 Test-and-Treat program: Reducing Preterm Births in South Australia
In South Australia,1 in 10 babies are born preterm.
Updated NHMRC Pregnancy Care guidelines advise omega-3 supplementation for pregnant women with low omega-3 levels to reduce their risk of prematurity. In 2021, in response to these guidelines, the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) partnered with SA Pathology to launch the Omega-3 Test-and-Treat Program (O3TTP), which aims to reduce preterm births.
The O3TTP, integrated into the SA Maternal Serum Antenatal Screening (SAMSAS) program, offers omega-3 testing for women with singleton pregnancies under 20 weeks gestation and provides tailored supplementation advice based on the results.
To order the test, check the omega-3 box on the SAMSAS form or write “omega-3 to SAMSAS” on any standard pathology form. GP practice software templates are available for download here.
Over 20,000 women have participated in the O3TTP, with around 17% showing low omega-3 levels, potentially benefiting from supplementation to reduce preterm birth risk. Further expansion of the program is important to achieve the best reductions in premature births in the community.
Please discuss the omega-3 test with your patients.
