GPEx wins two education research grants in 2020

GPEx is pleased to announce that we have been awarded two RACGP Education Research Grants (ERGs) in 2020. These grants both follow on from gaps identified through our 2019 workplace-based assessment Special ERG.

How can we best use GP Explore to drive learning? Dr Taryn Elliott

This ERG examines GP Explore as a reflective assessment tool.

To do this we will be asking registrars if they are willing to share their completed reflection with the research team, so that we can better understand this reflective process.

We will also be inviting registrars and supervisors who have completed GP Explore to participate in interviews so we can better understand your experiences.

The outcome from this research will assist us to develop GP Explore and reflective learning within the training program.

Can we do learning planning better?  Dr Emily Kirkpatrick

Overwhelming national evidence from the WBA research in 2019 revealed an overall dislike of the learning plans undertaken by registrars several times throughout their training. The tool was seen as having limited impact and acceptability.

Dr Emily Kirkpatrick will be leading this research in collaboration with Associate Professor Jill Benson as Prideaux Centre academic.

To be conducted between April and July across the NT and SA, this project will explore how registrars learn within their consultations and how they record their learning needs.

As part of the project an electronic learning log checklist will be used to allow tracking and monitoring of registrars’ learning areas, allowing medical educators and supervisors to understand their registrar’s learning needs in real-time.
