I graduated from the University of Adelaide in 2016, and did my intern and RMO years at the Lyell McEwin Hospital where I completed rotations in ED, Orthopaedics, AMU, Psychiatry, Medical Nights and Paediatrics. My GP training years were spent at two different GP clinics in southern Adelaide.

As I’ve just started in my GP career, I’m trying to keep my interests broad so that I can better determine if there’s a specific area that I’d love to delve into more. As a young female GP, a lot of my patients are young families, so I see a lot of women’s health and paediatrics consults.

During my hospital years, I completed the Sydney Child’s Health Program, which has helped with my paediatric knowledge. I’ve always enjoyed teaching, and since completing my GP training, I’ve done some casual work with GPEx to observe registrars in their clinics.

I think GP is a very special discipline that unfortunately doesn’t get enough exposure during medical school or hospital years. I’ve had medical students on their elective placements at GP clinics saying that they never would have considered GP as a career option if they hadn’t done it as an elective.

I hope that as a mentor I can help shed some light on what it is like to be a GP and the journey involved, so I can inspire medical students and doctors to pursue general practice as a specialty. As a newly Fellowed GP I hope I can offer fresh advice on the pathway – my last exams were only a year ago!
