Supporting Early Detection: GPEx Collaborates with Lung Foundation Australia on National Lung Cancer Screening Education
GPEx is proud to collaborate with Lung Foundation Australia to deliver the National Lung Cancer Screening Program Health Workforce Education, now live and available to health professionals across Australia.
Lung cancer remains the fifth most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in Australia, with almost 15,000 people diagnosed and around 8,000 deaths in 2023. Screening has the power to change this, detecting up to 70% of lung cancers at an early stage, when treatment is far more effective.
As part of the Australian Government’s new National Lung Cancer Screening Program, eligible Australians at high risk can now access biennial low-dose CT scans, expected to prevent more than 500 deaths each year through early detection.
To support the healthcare workforce in delivering this landmark program, GPEx partnered with Lung Foundation Australia to design and host a CPD-accredited education package for health professionals. This comprehensive online training includes seven self-paced modules (approximately 3.5 hours to complete) and offers 3.5 CPD points on completion.
The course guides participants through the entire screening process, from assessing patient eligibility and understanding the role of the National Cancer Screening Register, to communicating sensitively about results, consent and smoking cessation. It provides practical, evidence-based insights to help health professionals confidently integrate lung screening into routine care.
This collaboration underscores GPEx’s commitment to supporting high-quality education that empowers clinicians, strengthens early detection, and improves outcomes for Australians at risk of lung cancer.
