Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, Melbourne
Overview
Ahpra engaged gpex to design and develop a suite of online learning resources for supervisors of Specialist International Medical Graduates (SIMGs) undertaking the Medical Expedited Specialist Pathway.
The resources needed to support supervisors to understand their role and responsibilities in line with the Supervised Practice Framework, while also providing practical guidance on best practice processes across the supervision period. The project required a clear, accurate, and accessible education product that could help experienced supervisors quickly identify what was different, important, and required when supervising a SIMG through this pathway.
gpex worked with Ahpra Senior Policy Advisors, with project deliverables reviewed and approved by an Expert Reference Group and the Medical Board.
Challenges
The key challenge was designing resources for a time-pressured audience. Supervisors of SIMGs are experienced clinicians and supervisors working across active health settings, with limited time to complete additional training.
The resources had to be succinct, practical and complete, without duplicating foundational content that the audience was likely to already understand. They also needed to explain the specific requirements of supervising a SIMG through the Expedited Specialist Pathway, including how the role differs from other supervision contexts.
A further challenge was ensuring that the resources remained easy to navigate. Supervisors needed to be able to locate the right information quickly, at the point in the pathway where it became relevant.
